Jute fabric must absolutely not be exposed to direct sunlight. Jute fibers have a high lignin content; prolonged exposure to direct sunlight allows ultraviolet rays to damage the fiber structure, causing the fabric to yellow, become brittle, age, crack, fade, and lose its shape, thereby significantly shortening its lifespan. After routine cleaning, simply air-dry it in a cool, well-ventilated area; avoid direct sunlight and high-temperature drying, as this is key to maintaining jute.
Among the three, linen is hailed as the "queen of natural fibers" and is a preferred choice for apparel. Its fibers are fine, soft, and pliable; the fabric surface is smooth and refined, offering a gentle touch that does not irritate the skin, along with a natural, soft matte finish. Linen is moisture-wicking, breathable, antibacterial, anti-static, and wear-resistant. It possesses a sophisticated texture characterized by natural wrinkles, making it ideal for high-end textiles such as close-fitting garments, shirts, and bedding. Its only drawback is a tendency to wrinkle, requiring gentle, routine care.
Ramie, also known as "China grass," is a distinctive Chinese bast fiber, with my country ranking first globally in production. Its fibers are longer and stiffer, creating a fabric with a distinct, three-dimensional texture. Among the three types of bast fibers, ramie offers the best breathability and heat dissipation, providing a powerful cooling effect; it has long been a primary material for making traditional summer fabrics (*xiabu*). Ramie fabric holds its shape well, resists deformation, and drapes elegantly. It is frequently used for summer sun-protection clothing, dresses, and curtains, offering a crisp, firm, and cool-to-the-touch feel compared to linen.
Jute fibers are coarse, stiff, and heavy; while exceptionally tough, they feel rough and offer lower comfort, making them unsuitable for direct contact with the skin. Cost-effective and durable, jute prioritizes practicality over softness. It is rarely used for clothing, serving instead as the material for rigid home goods such as sacks, carpets, storage baskets, and wall coverings. Maintenance requires keeping it away from light and moisture at all times to prevent aging caused by sun exposure.
Choose linen for breathable, close-fitting wear; choose ramie for summer cooling; and choose jute for practical home decor. Remember to air-dry jute away from direct sunlight; properly distinguishing and maintaining these materials ensures you get the most value out of each type of bast fiber.
