In the spring and summer of 2025, linen shirts emerged as a popular fashion item, with linen-blend shirts seeing a significant increase in sales. The global linen fiber market is projected to expand at an annual growth rate of 8% to 10%. From luxury brands like Ermenegildo Zegna, Loro Piana, and Armani to fast-fashion labels such as Uniqlo, H&M, and Zara, all have adopted linen as a core fabric. Historically, linen was regarded as "soft gold" due to its harsh growth conditions and scarce output, symbolizing status and taste. Today, with advances in production technology, its value has shifted toward a narrative of emotional value. It avoids both the ostentation of traditional luxury and the cheapness of fast fashion, and its "imperfect aesthetics" cater to modern consumers' needs-Gen Z uses it to convey an "anti-anxiety" stance, while high-net-worth individuals build social identity rooted in "effortlessness." This aligns with McKinsey's survey showing 64% of consumers prioritize spiritual consumption. Brands like The Row, A&F, and COS have all used linen pieces to convey a style of relaxed sophistication.
Linen's popularity also stems from its sustainable attributes; it is the only textile that simultaneously meets the three criteria of being "naturally eco-friendly, renewable, and carbon-neutral." Gen Z and post-2000s generations have a higher understanding of green consumption (70% and 79% respectively), 57% of respondents are willing to change their purchasing habits to reduce environmental harm, and over 80% are ready to pay more for high-quality, sustainable linen clothing. Many brands are embracing sustainability: Piacenza (an Italian luxury fabric brand) will establish a social enterprise, Ermenegildo Zegna has committed to full traceability for fibers in its Oasi Lino collection, and Muji uses waterless dyeing technology for its hemp wide-leg pants (reducing carbon emissions by 45% compared to traditional processes). The global linen market is expected to exceed RMB 220 billion in 2025, with China accounting for 28%. Sustainability has become a new profit driver and innovation source for brands. As avant-garde designer Yohji Yamamoto stated, "The concept of beauty has expanded, and the textural beauty of linen has prevailed over the decorative beauty that dominated fashion for years"-linen is reshaping the discourse of fashion aesthetics.
