Flame retardant treatments for fabric have been around for decades, but the technology behind them has changed significantly in recent years. With fire safety codes tightening across commercial interiors, hospitality, and public spaces, fabric treaters and converters are turning to newer chemistries that perform better and last longer than older formulations.

 

How Fabric Treatments Actually Work

 

Most flame retardant treatments for fabric fall into two categories: topical applications and back‑coatings. Topical treatments are applied to the fabric surface, usually through a pad‑dry‑cure process where the fabric passes through a chemical bath, gets squeezed to remove excess, then dried and cured at controlled temperatures. Back‑coatings are spread onto the reverse side of the fabric, forming a layer that activates when exposed to heat.

 

The chemistry varies. Phosphorus‑based compounds are common for cellulosic fabrics like cotton and linen. When heated, these compounds promote char formation, which starves the fire of oxygen and slows heat transfer. Nitrogen‑phosphorus blends, often referred to as intumescent systems, go a step further-they swell and foam under heat, creating an insulating barrier that protects the substrate underneath. For synthetic fabrics like polyester, halogenated compounds have traditionally been used, though many manufacturers are now moving away from these due to environmental and health concerns.

 

What You Need to Know

 

One thing fabric buyers often get wrong: treatment effectiveness depends heavily on the fabric's weight and construction. A heavy, tightly woven fabric holds more chemistry and usually achieves a higher level of fire resistance than a lightweight, open weave. The same treatment applied to two different fabrics can produce completely different test results.

 

Durability is another key factor. Some treatments are designed to be permanent-they bond with the fiber and survive multiple washes. Others are semi‑durable or non‑durable, meaning they will wash out over time. For upholstery and drapery that rarely gets cleaned, non‑durable treatments may be perfectly acceptable. But for bedding, apparel, or any fabric that sees regular laundering, a permanent treatment is essential.

 

Standards and Testing

 

Which standard a treated fabric needs to meet depends on the end use. Upholstery fabrics are typically tested to California TB 117:2013 or BS 5852. Drapery fabrics often need to pass NFPA 701, while bedding and mattress covers require compliance with 16 CFR Part 1633. Each standard uses different ignition sources and acceptance criteria, so a treatment that works for one application may fail in another.
