Natural Luster

Eco-friendly Linen Fabric has a subtle natural sheen, giving it an elegant and sophisticated appearance.

Temperature Regulation

Thanks to its breathability and moisture-wicking properties, Eco-friendly Linen Fabric helps regulate body temperature, keeping you cool in the summer and providing some insulation in cooler weather.

Types of Eco-friendly Linen Fabric

Medium-weight Linen fabrics
Medium-weight Linen fabrics (190g/m²) This is our go-to fabric for most of our designs. Medium-weight linen works beautifully for pants, skirts, jackets, and dresses. It's dense enough to avoid transparency, except for very light colors like white or ivory, which may show a slight see-through effect. Ideal for warm climates, this linen keeps you cool, especially when worn loosely. It's also versatile enough for cooler days when layered. Most items in our catalog are made from this linen due to its perfect balance of breathability and coverage.

Lightweight Linen fabrics
Lightweight Linen fabrics (130g/m²) This thin, airy linen is perfect for summer tops, tunics, and dresses meant for extremely hot weather. It's slightly more transparent than medium-weight linen, particularly in lighter shades, making it ideal for layering or relaxed vacation wear. We recommend it for breezy tops, flowing dresses, and easy cover-ups.

Heavyweight Linen fabrics
Heavyweight Linen fabrics (220g/m²) We use heavyweight linen sparingly, mostly for structured belts or accessories. Its thickness adds extra durability where needed.

Gauze Linen fabrics
Gauze Linen fabrics (90g/m²) Soft, lightweight, and dreamy to the touch, linen gauze is ideal for scarves, shawls, and sun cover-ups. It's one of our favorite fabrics for summer, and we're excited to offer new colors this season!

Open Weave Linen fabrics
Open Weave Linen fabrics (190g/m²) With a more loose weave, this linen provides extra breathability, making it great for tops and cover-ups. The airy texture makes it ideal for warm, breezy days.

03.

04.

Industrial applications

Yes, this one might be a little odd, but it's true. The presence of eco-friendly linen fabric is undisputed. It is even used in industrial applications like canvases for paintings! And, you may not know this, but before metal, airplanes used to be covered with linen!

How to Choose Eco-friendly Linen Fabric

Linen Weight

The weight of a fabric is one of the characteristics that will influence its drape. As a general rule, the lighter the fabric, the thinner and easier to drape it will be, and the heavier the fabric, the more resistant and opaque it will be. However, this is, as I said, a very general rule, and there are certainly exceptions. Drape will also be influenced by the weave of the fabric, as well as post-weaving processing, such as sanforization or washing, which reduces shrinkage of the finished fabric.

Linen Weight Categories

You may encounter weight mentioned as either light, medium or heavy, depending on the source. This classification is somewhat arbitrary, but here is a table listing the different categories as you may see them on various online fabric stores.

Post-weaving processing

Once linen is woven, the product is not yet ready to be used in the garment or home textile industry. It undergoes a mechanical softening process (no chemicals or water is used!), rendering it softer and less prone to shrinking. Our Marcela linen has been sanforized, a mechanical process that increases the dimensional stability of the fabric. We do still recommend washing your fabric before you start your sewing project, unless you are familiar with calculating fabric shrinkage and applying that to your project.

About Colour (yes, colour with a u)

No matter how well we try to do our product photography, the colours will not appear the same on every device, and will vary. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you want more information on any of our products !

Process of Eco-friendly Linen Fabric
1

Growing and Harvesting of the plant - The plant is grown in cool, damp climates around the world. Once it matures, it is harvested and the seeds are removed.

2

Retting - The stems are soaked in water for several days or weeks until the natural pectins and waxes holding the fibres together break down.

3

Drying - The flax is dried and the fibres are combed and separated from any remaining bits of plant material through scutching.

4

Spinning - At this stage, the flax fibres are spun together into yarn. These yarns are used for weaving linen fabric.

5

Weaving - The process involves interlacing the yarns in a crisscross pattern to create a strong and durable fabric. The loom used for weaving linen fabric is often a simple and traditional design using pedals and hand-operated mechanisms to create the desired pattern.

6

Bleaching - After the fabric is woven, it is often treated with a process called "bleaching," which involves exposing the fabric to sunlight, water and natural acids to give it a brighter, whiter appearance.

7

Washing and Softening - Finally, the linen fabric is washed and softened using a combination of water, heat and mechanical agitation to make it more comfortable and easier to work with.

How to Maintain Eco-friendly Linen Fabric

Make sure all pieces are freshly laundered. This seems obvious, but any extra dirt can attract mould and mildew to your pieces.

Dry thoroughly before packing away. Even the slightest of damp can cause problems to your linen. Even dry with your hair dryer to make sure, then lay out for at least an hour to allow to breathe before storing.

Choose a storage area. This is simple-dry, cool, not too much light and enough room for the pieces to allow them to breathe.

Pillowcase to protect. An extra way to protect your items is to fold them in linen pillowcases. Maybe label each so you know which garments are inside.

Check at intervals. Make sure you check your items over the colder months for any damp or insects. Then in early spring, bring out to air, ready for wearing!

FAQ

Q: How to tell if 100% linen?

A: One way to identify linen fabric is to perform a burn test. Linen fabric will burn quickly, leaving behind a fine ash and a slight smell of burning paper. Synthetic fabrics, on the other hand, will melt and leave behind a hard, plastic-like residue.

Q: Is 100% linen better than cotton?

A: Cotton will make you feel warmer at first, but you may end up getting a little too warm, which is the case for many. Linen sheets, however, will retain the heat from your body, making you feel nice and cozy. Linen sheets feel heavier than cotton sheets and are about 30 percent stronger yet offers better breathability.

Q: What is 100% pure linen?

A: Linen refers to 100% pure linen, a material created using the inner stem fibres of a plant called Flax. The flax plants are harvested after around 100 days of growth, the seeds and leaves separated from the stalks which are then dried

Q: Does linen shrink every time you wash it?

A: The answer is quite simple: linen does naturally shrink, but many linen fabric manufacturers use different methods to prevent this from happening by pre-shrinking or pre-softening process. Linen shrinks like any other fabric made with natural fibers-it can change its shape during an incorrect way of washing.

Q: When should I stop wearing linen?

A: The traditional thinking is, never wear linen clothing before Memorial Day or after Labor Day. While most people adhere to this, there really is no reason-especially in Southern California-not to wear it year round. So, get your "summer" linens out and enjoy the light, airy feeling of this natural fabric.

Q: Which country made the best linen?

A: Belgium
Which country produces the best linen? Linen grown in Belgium is generally of superior quality, partly because of Belgium's long and well-respected tradition of growing flax and weaving linen, but mostly because of the unique qualities of the region where it is grown.

Q: How do you know if linen is pure?

A: When you touch linen, you'll notice the thick nature of the weave, the slubs, and also the coolness of the temperature. No matter the time of day, linen will feel cool to the touch, which is how you can tell you're touching authentic flax fabrics and not imitations.

Q: How can you tell if fabric is pure linen?

A: Examine the Fabric's Weave. It's usually woven in a plain weave, which means that the fibers are woven over and under each other in a simple pattern. If the fabric has a plain weave and a unique texture, then it's likely that the fabric is linen.

Q: Is linen fabric eco-friendly?

A: Linen is a natural fibre, it actually reduces your CO2 footprint, it uses less water than most fabrics, it's grown and produced locally, it's biodegradable and recyclable, and it lasts bloody ages! So when you're picking out your mens linen suit, make sure it's a good one.

Q: Is linen toxic free?

A: Unlike many synthetic fabrics, linen is derived from the flax plant and undergoes a minimal chemical treatment during production. This process ensures that linen textiles are free from harmful substances, such as formaldehyde and phthalates, commonly found in synthetic fabrics.

Q: Is there such a thing as organic linen?

A: Linen is a bast fiber, meaning that the fibers are extracted from the stem of the plant and are many cells thick. Unadulterated, organic linen, therefore, is extremely strong and durable-it can lasts for many years. When taking this into account, the cost per use is negligible.

Q: Does linen have formaldehyde?

A: Linen, unlike synthetics and artificial fabrics, does not cause irritation and is gentle on the skin. This is due to the fact that pesticides, chlorophenols, formaldehyde, allergenic dyes, banned azo dyes and extractable heavy metals are not used in its cultivation and in the production of clothes.

Q: When should you not wear linen?

A: The traditional thinking is, never wear linen clothing before Memorial Day or after Labor Day. While most people adhere to this, there really is no reason-especially in Southern California-not to wear it year round. So, get your "summer" linens out and enjoy the light, airy feeling of this natural fabric.

Q: What is the most polluting fabric?

A: Polyester and Nylon: Polyester and nylon are used extensively in fashion, as they're cheap and durable. However they're extremely hazardous to the environment, as they're non-biodegradable and unsustainable. The production of nylon emits nitrous oxide, a greenhouse gas that triggers the destruction of the ozone layer.

Q: What fabrics are not eco-friendly?

A: Polyester, acrylic, rayon, nylon and conventional cotton are the least sustainable fabrics. Polyester is often used in clothing items, and most polyesters are non-biodegradable, so it can take up to 200 years to break down if it ends up in a landfill.Manufacturing linen, however, is much more time and resource-intensive than making cotton, which has led to a steady reduction in popularity of this fabric that began with the invention of the cotton gin.

Q: Is linen better for the environment than cotton?

A: In terms of the raw material, linen has less impact on the environment. It can be grown with much less water and chemical inputs compared to cotton. However, it's important to remember that the sustainability of a material is highly dependent on the practices adopted at each stage of the supply chain.

Q: What is the difference between flax linen and linen?

A: The difference between linen and flax is simple: Flax is the plant and linen is the fabric made of flax. The fibres from the plant are processed and turned into flax linen to make beautiful clothing items, bedding, and other home décor items.

Q: Which is the healthiest fabric to wear?

A: Incorporating natural, organic fabrics into your wardrobe not only supports your health but also promotes sustainability. By choosing materials like organic cotton, flax linen, hemp linen, silk and merino wool, you can ensure that your clothing is breathable, gentle and free from harmful chemicals.

Q: Does linen release Microplastics?

A: It is possible to create non-polluting fabrics. Choose plastic-free fabrics. This includes organic cotton, wool, linen, and other natural fibers. These fabrics are easy to find and do not contain the synthetic microfibers that are shed in washing machines.

Q: What does linen do to the body?

A: Linen is anti-static-which explains why it remains cleaner for longer periods of time and doesn't cling to the body. It is said that linen will soften and preserve your skin due to its PH-neutral balance. Linen bedding also has a light massaging effect on your skin due to the tiny breaks throughout the fabric.
